Lola the eco dog Top 10 New Year's Resolutions for 2010

Lola our spokesdog and eco pup has began feverishly writing down her top 10 New Years Resolutions for 2010. We humans know that keeping New Year's Resolution is always a yearly struggle and the same goes for our pets.

With so many failed resolutions she figured that perhaps some accountability in 2010 was in order and wanted to share them with you. Here are what she deems as some funny and hopefully realistic resolutions. Let us know what you think!

1. I want more play dates in the upcoming year.
2.
I will take time out of busy day of chasing squirrels and barking at the neighborhood cat to stop & smell behinds.
3.
I will start a Tree Fan Club and rally the support of squirrel community.
4.
I will not bark when I hear a door bell on a tv.
5. I will
not to bark at the beautiful pup in the mirror and finally realize that it is my reflection.
6.
I will not leave drooling puddles on floor when parents are eating at the dinner table.
7.
I will not steal the toilet paper to re-decorate the house.
8.
I will resist urge to mark my territory at every hydrant or tree.
9.
I will politely leave the room before breaking wind so mom does not point the finger at dad.
10. I won't sprawl out on the bed and take up mom side of bed so as not to demote her to the edge of the bed or floor.

"It's time to make New Years Resolutions! If your pet could speak, what would their resolution be?" Be funny, witty & creative! Share & comment below.

New Year's resolutions for pet owners

We all love ringing in the New Year because it marks new beginnings, reflections and fresh starts. With the most famous New Years Resolutions being getting in shape, shedding those Holiday indulgent pounds and kicking bad habits.

But when you sit down with pen & paper to write down your New Years Resolutions don't forget your pets health & well being. So, to help get Fido & Felix's 2010 off on the right paw here are must have pet New Year's Resolutions. These New Year Resolutions are sure to keep your pet healthy and happy all year round.

New Year's Resolutions for pets - provided by Pet Vet Dr. Sandi Norman (wthr.com)

1. I will give my pet dedicated time in 2010.

Pets really just want your time more than anything-they are socialized to your family-pack or pride-so making sure there is time each day for your pet is one of the best resolution you can make and usually pretty easy to keep!

2. I will have my pet spayed or neutered.

A happy healthy pet has a longer life and is a much better family member when it is spayed or neutered. It is an economical, one-time expense that lasts a lifetime and helps with the millions of animals we euthanize yearly in this country

3. I will provide my pet health care appropriate for his age and condition.

Get the needed testing or screening done so pets can get early treatment and you can develop good base data on your pet's health and a good relationship with your veterinarian.

4. I will give heartworm & flea prevention control on a regular basis.

Fleas are a year round problem, even in our cold climate. They live in the house and also outside in warmer climates. Year round flea prevention keeps the population from bugging your pet!

**Lola the eco dog recommends the all natural, effective & preventive route free of toxins & harsh chemicals.

5. I will start my pet on a proper diet for his age/medical condition.

One of the great developments in animal nutrition is that we have great foods for different stages of life and medical conditions that can minimize your visits to the vet and help control problems associated with that medical condition. The new year is a good opportunity to get started on that path by finding a diet that works for your pet and sticking with it.

6. I will learn to groom my pet for good health.

The new year is a great opportunity to learn how to groom your pet. Many of these minor grooming procedures can be done at home where it is less stressful to the pet.

7. I will exercise and play with my pet more.

Our pets are part of our family so carve out a small amount of time with them each day or a dedicated time each week. They become much better pets when you include them in your life.

8. I will enroll in a basic training class.

This is especially true for new puppy owners. If you have a pet with a behavior problem, ask your veterinarian and seek out special help from experts to work toward solution. It will take time and patience, but you will be rewarded with less stress and a happier family member.

9. I will socialize my pet to other pets and people.

Enroll in a dog park or take your brand new puppy to socialization classes so that they become used to other animals and people.

10. I will donate time/effort/resources to a local animal welfare group.

Both your time and your money are needed at the local shelters and humane groups in your city. You may be surprised what your talents can do for these organizations that need your help.

11. I will certify my pet as a therapy animal.

Do you have a pet that is especially social, patient and people-oriented? Then he might be a good therapy animal. We have discovered that pets increase life span, help speed recovery by patients young and old and are a great moral booster to people in various psychiatric and medical treatment programs. Contact your local humane group and they can direct you to a good resource.

Guest Blog Post Aimee's Delicious Christmas Peppermint Bark Recipe

So, what do you think of when you hear the words Peppermint Bark. Well, if you are die hard dog lovers like us then you might guess that this ia a dog treat. Or perhaps, a command given by an owner to his dog named Peppermint. However, lucky for us our sweet tooth gets the last laugh.

With Christmas going to the dogs our twitter friend Aimee was kind enough to share her Peppermint Bark Recipe for us humans to devour. Sorry Lola, our official Paw Luxury treat taster, this recipe is for human consumption only. Because why should dogs get all the fun!

Thanks Aimee for sharing this delicious recipe you posted on your blog, we better get cookin!

It's becoming tradition (by Aimee: Animal lover, DIY junkie, blogger, and geeky girl!)

For Christmas of 2007 I thought it would be fun to make peppermint bark. And it was! Not only was it very easy, but it was also so very tasty. Last Christmas I was going to make it again, but thought it would also be fun to make gingerbread cookies. Well, things happened and I ran out of time for the peppermint bark. People wondered… where was the peppermint bark? Apparently we weren’t the only ones who loved it. So this year, I made sure to make peppermint bark in time to send to our “Seattle Santas”, and of course to enjoy for ourselves!

Tips on How To Get Your Dog to Pose in Christmas Photo with Santa

Nothing say's Christmas then getting a family photo taken with Santa and sending them as gifts to brighten family & friends Holidays. Now your pet can strike an adorable pose with Santa Paws and join in on these picture perfect festivities.

But before you plop your pet on Santa's lap for a festive camera moment preparation is key. Here are some simple tips on getting your furry friend to be on best doggy behavior when posing with Santa.

1. Quench your dog's hunger pains. Feed your dog a few hours before the photo opt. Its hard to get a hungry dog to behave, stay still, listen and concentrate with a growling stomach.

2. Bring treats & toys to photo session. Bribery works well with pets. Bring along your pet’s favorite treats and toy as a reward or to persuade your pet to behave. Your dog will happily sit, stay and smile if they known they are going to be given a delicious treat or playful toy afterward.

3. Give your dog a potty break prior to barking "Cheese". Don't let your dog surprise Santa with a lump of coal on his lap or black boot. Walk your pet after the car ride in route to the North Pole & prior to getting photo taken with Santa. This prevents accidents and helps to calm down an overly excited dog waiting in line to see Santa.

4. Meet & Sniff. Let your pet sniff and get acquainted with Santa. Often times new surroundings & people can cause your pet to become frightened or aggressive. It is important that your dog or cat gets assurance by you that Santa is not a danger.

If you haven't already realized, dogs are a ball of pent up energy. Taking your dog for a long walk or fun game of fetch before the picture will help pull in the reins of a hyper dog making your pet more apt to listen.

5. Standing Behind the Scenes. Ask the photographer where he or she wants your pet to look. Stand in this spot holding a treat or toy within your pet’s view and keep calling your pet’s name to get her to focus. A jingle or squeaky toy works wonders to get your pets attention. Make sure your dog understands the basic obedience commands like "Sit" and “Stay”.

6. Reward your pet. Once the photo session is complete don't forget to reward your pet with a treat for being "a good little boy or girl."

Guest Blog Post- Holiday Pet Travel: Tips for safe air travel with your pet

As the Holidays are upon it is time to start planning that long awaited trip to see friends and family. The Holidays are the peak season for travel & the pet setting crowd. For those of us who consider our pets part of the family, our furry companions will also becoming along for the ride. Here is a wonderful article published by Mercury News Wire giving preparation travel tips when flying the pet friendly skies with your travel buddy. We here at Paw Luxury hope you & your furry co-pilot have merry & safe travels this Holiday Season!

Holiday Pet Travel: Tips for safe air travel with your pet

Planning to fly the friendly skies with your furry, four-legged, or feathered companion this holiday season? Following some common sense tips will help ensure a happy and safe flight for you and your pet.

Before you begin your trip, be sure that your pet is "up" for the journey. This means a visit to the vet for a medical checkup and to ensure that your pet is up-to-date with all necessary vaccinations. Be sure to tell your vet about your plans to travel by air. Your vet can recommend to you whether your pet is medically prepared for this method of travel. However, you must also take into consideration the demeanor and temperament of your pet when determining whether airline travel is a good choice for your little friend. You know your pet best. Once you've got the green light, here are some tips that will help make you and your pet's air travel happy and safe.

-During your pre-trip vet appointment, ask your vet to issue a health certificate for your pet. This typically needs to be dated within ten days of departure. Carry this with you while traveling with your pet, as it may be required at different points throughout your travel.

- Have everything packed early and leave early to allow plenty of time to deal with normal air travel as well as your pet's needs. Keep yourself calm before the flight as pets sense your stress and anxiety.

- Select the right airline approved pet carrier. Carriers are available in both hard-sided and soft-sided. Soft-sided carriers are more suitable for carry-on and tend to fit better under the seat. Follow the manufacturer's recommendations as far as the appropriate size carrier for your pet. The proper size carrier should allow your pet to be able to lie down comfortably, stand up and turn around. Ensure for proper ventilation and comfort.

- Give your pet at least a month before your flight to become familiar with the travel carrier. This will minimize his or her stress during travel.

- Consider booking a non-peak flight, which typically means less passengers and more cabin room. This will help ease potential stress for your pet.

- Use direct flights. Changing planes with your pet may cause undue stress on your pet, particularly if layover time is not adequate for a pet walk and bathroom break.

- Always travel on the same flight as your pet. Ask the airline if you can watch your pet being loaded and unloaded below the cabin.

- When you board the plane, notify the captain and at least one flight attendant that your pet is traveling with you and whether your pet is with you or below the cabin. If the captain knows that pets are on board, he or she may take special precautions.

- Do not ship pug-nosed dogs or cats such as Pekingese, Chow Chows, and Persians in the cargo hold. These breeds have short nasal passages that leave them vulnerable to oxygen deprivation and heat stroke in cargo holds.

- If traveling during the summer or winter months, choose flights that will accommodate the temperature extremes, particularly if your pet is traveling below the cabin.

- Try not to fly with your pet during busy travel times such as holidays and the summer. Your pet is more likely to undergo stress during hectic travel periods.

- Fit your pet with a collar that can't get caught in carrier doors. Affix two pieces of identification on the collar-a permanent ID with your name and home address and telephone number and a temporary travel ID with the address and telephone number where you or a contact person can be reached.

- Affix a travel label to the carrier with your name, permanent address and telephone number, final destination, and where you or a contact person can be reached as soon as the flight arrives.

- Bring along a current photo of your pet. This will make it easier for others to help you find your pet should your pet get separated from you.

- Make sure that your pet's nails have been clipped to protect against their hooking in the carrier's door, holes, and other crevices.

- Do not give your pet tranquilizers unless they are prescribed by your veterinarian. Make sure your veterinarian understands that the prescription is for air travel.

- Do not feed your pet for four to six hours prior to air travel. Small amounts of water can be given before the trip. If possible, put ice cubes in the water tray attached to the inside of your pet's kennel. A full water bowl will only spill and cause discomfort.

- Carry a leash with you so that you may walk your pet before check-in and after arrival. Do not place the leash inside the kennel or attach it to the outside of the kennel

- When you arrive at your destination, open the carrier as soon as you are in a safe place and examine your pet. If anything seems wrong, take your pet to a veterinarian immediately. Get the results of the examination in writing, including the date and time.

Lola's Christmas Picks: Holiday Stocking Stuffer Christmas Pet Gift Ideas

While you are preparing to hang the stockings over the fireplace or down the stairwell, don't forget to hang up Fido & Felix's stocking as well. It time to reward mans best friend for a year of good behavior, okay no one's perfect.

Watch your pet jump with glee & tails wag with joy as you present him or her with a goody-filled stocking on Christmas day. So, to help you with the stocking stuffing our resident eco dog Lola (aka personal shopper) has some simple, fun, practical & delicious pet gift ideas.

1. Give the ultimate gift of playtime. Replace ratty squeaky & old chew toys with safer, durable eco ones your dog will enjoy for hours. Lola favorite toy is her West Paw Bumi, Hurley & squeaky eco turtle. These toys are perfect for even the most aggressive chewers.

2. Throw in a few bully stick chews for your dog to chomp & gnaw on. These are a safer alternative to rawhide which can splinter and be a choking hazard. Our odorless bully sticks are all natural, free range, digestible, healthy and safe for your deserving pup.

3. Pick up a few of your pets favorite treats. Although festive foods, decadent desserts, candy canes & Santa's chocolate chip cookies are off limits to pets. You can still indulge dogs sweet tooth with healthy, specialty, droolworthy holiday treats & biscuits. The Polka Dog Treats & Fruitables will be a hit amongst your furry four legged family members.

4. Keep your dog looking happy & dapper all year round with a new collar, leash & tags. Paw-sonality - dogs ooze it & their collars are the perfect opportunity to reflect it. From artistic to zany, fest your eyes on Earthdog decorative collar line - something perfect for every dog in your life (if we do say so ourselves). Lola adores her comfy Earthdog hemp Astrid collar & Krebs leash made out of recycled climbing rope.

5. Consider being a practical Santa this year. Perhaps your dog needs a good grooming or "pawdicure" for those callous paws that have taken a beaten. Fuzzyard ear cleanser, Dirty Hairy Shampoo & Conditioner and Cain & Able Paw Rub are great for your pups essential routine maintenance.
