ReplyDeleteYes, I think pets should be tax deductions... well, maybe not so much, because then you would have people adopting them for the wrong reasons. But it sure sounds good for responsible pet owners.
If you love your pet why would you bother about taxes and whether expenses incurred towards your pet is tax deductible or not. A definite NO.

ReplyDeleteThey (Cody and Babbette) are as much my children as your human children are. We cook specifically for them, and they contribute to our health and welfare! Why wouldn't they have a tax credit?

ReplyDeleteI'm not sure that pets should be tax deductible, but the cost to spay or neuter them definitely should be. It would be a great incentive for those who might not normally be apt to do so, thereby improving their pets' health, and helping to control the pet population.

ReplyDeleteNo, the tax code is crazy enough without getting pets into the mix. I do love my dog, though. It would be great to get any kind of break on the expense of keeping a healthy animal.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Michelle Diane. Not so much a tax credit but a tax deduction for spaying/neutering to encourage pet owners to be responsible would be great.

If kids can be tax deductible then dogs should be two...says the mother of two Shih Tzu's with very expensive eating, hygiene and medical habits!
ReplyDeleteEvery tax season I joke that I wish would could get a tax credit for our dog since we don't have children. :)
ReplyDeleteBut seriously, I think if that were the case, we would have people adopting dogs or hoarding dogs for all ofthe wrong reasons and that could lead to abuse. We already have enough abused dogs in the rescue system. I know I adopted and rehabilitated one.
I like a credit of some sort on the local or state level for spaying/neutering though. Our city does that somewhat. We pay less for dog licenses since our dog is neutered.
Absolutely not. Tax deductions and tax credits should not be given unless there is an underlying policy for doing so. Putting a lot of love and energy into a pet is, while wonderful and fulfilling, not a good policy reason to get a deduction from taxes.
ReplyDeletePets are a luxury item. Sure, there are intangible benefits to owning one, but those benefits are almost entirely personal (i.e., society is not benefited much by people owning/taking care of/spending money on pets). Tax credits/deductions for the expenses of raising/educating children essentially come from the obligation and the duty to raise and educate those children, a duty imposed by the government. There is no such duty imposed by society to adopt and keep pets.
Yes! They should! My other two kids grew up, moved away, and claim themselves. I should be able to claim the two babies that depend on me for support. They're my kids, too!
ReplyDeleteAs much as it would benefit responsible pet owners, it would attract more irresponsible pet owners and increase the number of animals already being neglected, abused and not cared for. My vote would be no.
ReplyDeleteI don't think pets should be tax deductible...as someone mentioned already in the comments, I think this would lead to people adopting/buying pets just for the money. There are already too many homeless dogs and cats, let's spend the tax dollars helping them!
ReplyDeleteI have been a dog lover and owner for most of my life, and I've been saying for years that they should be deductible, especially for those of us that take as much care of them as we do our children. In fact, for many of us, they are our children and as such take a lot of money to take care of. I don't think it will ever happen, but it's a good point to bring up.
ReplyDeleteWe don't have children and consider our dog Macualy the little boy we never had, and our cats are the little girls we never had. We treat them like we would human children. If it came to a vote I would say "yes" to making pets tax deductible. Having said that, I am concerned about the whack jobs that would go out and adopt pets just for that reason. Interesting topic!
ReplyDeleteWe have 4 dogs and while I think it would be great, I have to honestly say no, pets should not be tax deductible.
ReplyDeleteIt would be too easy for people to abuse this by having more pets than they can support. Hoarding and abandonment of pets are already to big of a problem.
yes i think you should be able to because most dog are like chidren you feed them take them to the doctors when they are sick and you must give them thier needed shots, and check ups. and i love my k9, work partner (seach and rescue)as muck as i do people.

For some of us, our furbabies ARE our kids. We pay for insurance for them and we certainly spend as much as some people do on their kids, so yeah...totally tax deductible!!
ReplyDeleteI think healthcare for your pets should be tax deductible, because yeah, then you'd have them being adopted for the wrong reasons and they need and deserve love. But having to pay for surgeries should be.

3) While I don't think they should be deducted as dependents because I agree with some posters that it may encourage irresponsible pet ownership, I do think there should be a tax credit for adopting a dog from a shelter (with proof) and/or having a credit with a cap toward medical expenses and spay/neutering (with proof).

ReplyDeleteI guess I have mixed feelings on pets being tax deductible. I would say no for just owning a pet because I think there would be people that would get pets just for the tax deductions and that would be terrible.
ReplyDeleteBut I think there should be some kind of tax deduction for healthcare for the pet. Like if the animal needs to be on special medications or a special diet for health reasons or a major surgery then I think it would be ok.
Yes. I think a small tax deduction (as in the cost of the adoption fee) would be wonderful to people who adopt dogs from the pound or rescue. That would help get the unwanted dogs into homes and make it more favorable to adopt than to buy form a puppy mill. This tax deduction would in no way cause people to get pets for the money, but rather would tilt the scales in favor of those pets that need homes.
